scaned page of The Ulimate Book of Martial Arts Fay Goodman, where Yoshino's design originaly came from!
Somei-Yoshino's outfit comes directly from Iatio martial arts uniform,
consisting of: kosode kimono, juban, unamori-hakama, tabi & zori. Yoshino's
cloths also resemble that of an Edo-era man's of the samurai class, because
I wanted her to look different than typical woman warriors featured in other
anime/manga series. Her appearance is nearly identical to that of Fay
Goodman (pictured), from "The Ultimate Book of Martial Arts".

Aside from outer appearence, she is a mix of Queen Bodica & Bushi-onna. I
wanted a protogonist who's an anti-heroine, conservatively attractive,
rebellious, non-romantic & prefers fighting battles.
two tengu duking it out
Kagekiri’s true demon form is that of the Tengu- a mythological creature of
Japanese myth. There are 3 different variations of this creature: the karasu
(crow faced) tengu, the long-nosed tengu & human shaped tengu. Kagekiri
is the human shaped Tengu. All Tengu have the wings of a crow & are
incredible swordsmen. They are said to live in the mountains, far from
humans.

He's the only character that isn't based off of anyone. He was a "emergency
character" I needed & gave him typical manga features.
cool statue of Minomoto, Musashi
Takemaru, Arashi is based directly off of the strongest swordsman that
ever lived- Musashi, Minamoto the undefeated bushi. However, Takemaru's
personality is not based on Musashi's.

Musashi Minomoto was unique for he used a two sword style, & of course
completely undefeated in every battle. Later in his life, he wrote a book titled
"Book of the Five Rings". In this book, he discusses the fighting techniques,
battle strategies & how to win a battle. He wrote in different scrolls & broke it
up under the five elements as technique's.

Kanitsuki, Akatsuki is based off of someone I know.
a kitsune in human disguise
Tenchimaru, Shizen is based off of the famous kitsune- Japanese Fox. In
folklore, their famous for various types of magic including: transformation,
bewitching, creating mini-dimensions, illusions & spiting kitsune-bi (fox fire).
They can change into a human form, however it is never perfect. Either their
tail or ears appear in their human guise. One can tell a kitsune in human
form by peering at their reflection in the water, and a foxes tail shows!
Kitsune despises & fears dogs, Oni and Dragons.

He's an original character I created. I wanted a character with constant
dueling forces against itself, in other words that he's always in a state of
being pulled in two directions at the same time. Were does his loyalties lye-
serving his master that saved his life or defending Yoshino's life? Talk about
one confused character.
His name is also special, it means Nature, also dueling forces!

Settei are production reference sketches, usually refer to anime but I'm also applying it to making manga.
I used this for inspiration to create the characters. Click on pics to read commentary & to view larger in a new window!  =)
I took great care into thinking about the connection between the characters appearance and how their names are tied into their personality.
Every name is special as each one both suits and describes the characters perfectly! Their personalities are usually based on a real person &
I used both the Western & Asian Zodiac Astrology. Their garb, names & personality all tied together- nothing is wasted.

All this research, including the inspiration of the story & elements- took approx. 8 years! Before I could write a manga, I had to learn more about
ancient traditional Japanese culture including mythology, clothing & language. It's also heavily inspired from Heian & Sengoku Jidai, Han, Tang
& Ming Dynasty of China, Mongolian nomads, Native Americans, Ainu, Tibetan Buddhist Monks, Shintoism, Onmyoudo & Hinduism.
